Meet our Senior Bartender
Senior Bartender Johnny Chung Kam Hung, one of The Peninsula Hong Kong's longest-serving employees, has worked at the hotel for over 60 years. His father, formerly a Captain in The Peninsula's iconic Lobby, set the tone for a family tradition of working at the hotel.
Johnny followed in his father's footsteps, joining The Peninsula in 1957 at the age of 15 as a messenger boy in the Catering Department. Life was extremely busy, as at this time only two hotels on Kowloon side provided such services and organised private functions. After almost four years of traversing across Hong Kong, Johnny was promoted to Bar Busboy in the Lobby Cocktail Bar. Open from 11:00am to 1:00am daily and located in the corner of The Lobby (where Cartier now stands), with only 10 seats along the bar and six cocktail tables, this small intimate bar became one of Hong Kong's most celebrated watering holes with its stream of high profile visitors.
Johnny's most famous encounter came when Hollywood great Clark Gable (who was staying at The Peninsula) entered the bar and asked for a 'Screwdriver'. The rest is the stuff of legend, and Johnny - who was nonplussed as he had never heard of such a drink in Hong Kong and was about to call the hotel's engineering department for assistance - saw Gable take him through the recipe for the famous concoction of vodka and orange juice. The 'Screwdriver' was thus born in Hong Kong.
